My project will combine my figurative, biomorphic digital sculptures in a virtual environment. I’m inspired by the alien ship and the shapeshifting qualities in Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis series as well as. My primary interest is creating a first person VR experience where players can traverse this world, but I am also open to creating a short film that involves green screen if the project ends up needing that instead. I’m thinking that I want to make a maze, or a path that the player has to follow through the experience so I can control what they see, and the order in which they see it. There will be walls and cliffs that keep the player on the path, which will wind around as the player is lead through different areas.
Visually, I want the world to be luminous, shiny and biomorphic. The terrain will read like a living, alien body and have the distorted figures not only live in their environment, but also be a part of it. The ground will be uneven, and players will be surrounded by caverns and ridges that look like organs. I plan to keep the color scheme mostly analogous with pops of complimentary colors in surprising areas as players navigate around the space. The models will be made through a combination of 3D scanning and VR sculpting.
Original map idea
The more I work on this project, the more my ideas are changing about what the final product will be. Over a month into the project, I'm more interested in developing the bodily environment and experience than having it be a weird gallery for my sculptures.
